Dr. Ralph Wilson of Web Marketing Today published an article on how to select a niche that has enough demand to generate adequate revenue, but not so much competition that advertising costs are excessively high.

In the article, How to Fail at Online Business - Neglect Niche Marketing, he explains why franchise businesses and MLM schemes fail on the Internet due to (1) competition and (2) fewer geographical market limitations.

According to Dr. Wilson, the answer is in researching and clearly defining a market niche with sufficient demand but without overwhelming competition. Nichification is the key.

The most important thing in Internet marketing is niche selection. Without the right niche your sales will be virtually non-existent. This is where a lot of people make their mistakes. When looking for a niche they will try to promote something that interests them. There is nothing wrong with this, but you have to be absolutely sure that there is a hungry market for it.

Niche selection can be very tricky. A lot of people will pick a niche, promote it for a while, make no sales and just give up. They will claim that niche marketing just doesn’t work and that anyone that says it’s profitable is lying. Well, the truth of the matter is, a lot of people, even top Internet marketers will pick a bad niche from time to time. But the key is not to give up. If you pick a niche that isn’t profitable throw it out and move on to the next one.

You may have to research a lot of niches before you find the one that is right for you. Not everyone is meant to promote every niche. But when you find that perfect niche you will know it. It could be a niche that you have a particular interest in and want to learn more about or it could be niche that deals with a problem that you have already had and managed to solve. It is important that you don’t stop with just one niche. Pick a handful of niches that interest you. Promote more than one. When one or two of these niches start pulling in the profits, then start promoting them like crazy. Squeeze every bit of cash that you can out of them.

The best way to test a niche is to become an affiliate first. Chances are, if there are several products in the niche you choose, then there is a market for it. Don’t be afraid of a little competition.

Becoming an affiliate is the best way to learn the ins and outs of the niche marketing game before you dive in to product creation on your own. This can save you a ton of time and money. When the time comes to develop your own product and start marketing it, you won’t go in blind.

All of this may seem very complicated to someone just starting out in Internet marketing. The potential for information overload is great. You need to have a simple step by step blueprint that will tell you what to do.

And here’s the good news…

You can find everything that you need to know about niche selection and how to master that niche for maximum profits in an informative eBook called “Cracking the Niche Code”. Everything in the ebook is laid out in a simple fashion. It will take you from niche selection to totally annihilating your competition.

So if you are tired of trying and failing, get your hands on a copy of this ebook today:

Here’s a question I felt I had to answer as part of “Make Your Dreams a Reality!” month, since it’s probably one that a lot of beginning marketers have on their minds.

It comes from Katerina, who writes:

I have read all the ebooks and have the programs to find niches and still I come up empty handed because when you follow the directions you discover that most of the niches I like have a high demand but also high supply.

I have not found yet a niche that has a good demand but a low supply.

Are niches all dried up now?

Well, Katerina, if I said the Internet isn’t becoming more competitive, I would be lying. If I told you that finding a niche market on the Internet is as easy today as it was five years ago, I would be lying.

The Internet is a competitive hunting ground, and it’s only going to get more competitive — but does that mean all the good opportunities are gone?

NO!!!

You are talking about a business medium that allows you to reach every wired corner of the world from your computer at home. According the Internet World Stats, as of June 10, 2007 there were 1.133 BILLION people online — and it’s still growing at a phenomenal rate.

With those kinds of numbers, I’d be willing to guess there are still a few great opportunities waiting to be discovered!

However, the fact is: If your hobby or interest happens to be something like “golf” or “health products,” the chances of finding a niche are slim to none. These are saturated markets, and it’s time to expand beyond them.

If you are serious about making money online and you have explored your interests and have found them to be too competitive, then it’s time to broaden the scope of your search.

What would you enjoy learning more about? Don’t let your lack of knowledge stop you from exploring a topic you’re interested in. I know if I set aside an hour a day for the next month and immersed myself in an unfamiliar niche, I would have enough knowledge to start an online business based on that topic.

The point I am trying to make here, is don’t limit yourself to what you know today. Broaden the scope of your search and explore new niches where you aren’t already an expert — and all of sudden different potential businesses will start to appear.

My final comment is this: Don’t always write a business opportunity off simply because there’s some competition in the market. Rather, you should determine the viability of an opportunity by analyzing the quality of the competition.

If you look at the competition and believe you could do a better job meeting the needs of the market — if you can come up with a unique selling proposition that offers more value and truly differentiates you from all the other sellers out there — then you can be massively successful in an already competitive market.

Remember: Perseverance is key! Like Albert Einstein said:

It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.

To your success…

We’ve just added a bookmark to myGoals.com into the VRE Toolbar (see Ideas > myGoals.com). This resource can inspire you what niche business to start.

myGoals.com is the Web’s premier site for setting, managing, and reaching personal and professional goals. Their website users can set as many goals as they like, creating custom GoalPlans from scratch or selecting from a library of pre-made GoalPlans that contain expert advice for accomplishing the goal.

There are literally hundreds of subcategories in their goals directory, from all areas of interests. For example, there are 100+ subcategories in the Personal Growth & Interests category alone.

Inside every subcategory there are two lists. The first one is called “Some ideas” and the second one is “Pre-made Goalplans”. This is where it gets interesting!

Let’s take a look at the “Some ideas” list in the Family & Relationships > Clothing & Personal Style (Women) category:

“To dress for success”

“To always look well groomed”

“To keep my fingernails manicured”

“To always have polished shoes”

“To revamp my wardrobe”

“To shop with a wardrobe consultant”

“To smile more”

“To always look and act like a gentleman”

Ring a bell? In most cases, you can simply add the word “How” and get a great theme for a $7 report and/or a niche website:
